What Actually Happens During a Coaching Session with Me?
Feb 02, 2024Continuing on from my previous Weekly Wins Blog, this blog will provide a look into the multifaceted journey of a typical family coaching session that I would run, shedding light on the various components that contribute to a successful experience. We all know that family life, with its interesting dynamics and diverse personalities, often presents both awesome moments and challenging ones. In these moments of complexity, families may seek assistance with me as your coach to navigate and enhance your connections and broaden your understanding.
Generally coaching sessions start after a discovery call, however, sometimes people can be ready for action and jump straight into a coaching session. An initial coaching session is crucial for understanding the family's unique dynamics, strengths, and areas of improvement. I will build on what we discussed during our discovery call by actively listening and providing thought provoking questions to further gather your perspectives and concerns in a more in-depth perspective. Following this, together we collaborate on goal setting, outlining the specific objectives you hope to achieve through coaching. In subsequent sessions, we generally don’t go over this content again, as we have our specific goals to achieve, and we run with them, unless of course you’d like to modify them!
We then get specific and tailored to your situation and personal goals. We build on your perspective to encourage awareness, by providing insight, effective communication, conflict resolution, and understanding individual perspectives. Additionally, I introduce various skill-building exercises, aiming to enhance the emotional intelligence and interpersonal abilities.
The coaching session also explores that of family dynamics. I ask questions and provide suggestions that facilitate awareness around intricate relationships and communication patterns. This phase often involves identifying recurring themes, triggers, and patterns that may contribute to tension or disconnect. I always foster an environment where the person I’m coaching feels safe to express themselves and explore potential areas for growth.
As the coaching session progresses, I guide you through problem-solving and/or conflict resolution strategies. These may include active listening techniques, effective communication skills, and collaborative decision-making. I help develop practical and sustainable solutions to address specific challenges, promoting a harmonious home and understanding among family members.
As the session approaches its conclusion, there is time for reflection and the assignment of homework tasks. I encourage you to reflect on the session, identifying insights gained and progress made. Homework assignments may include practicing communication exercises, implementing conflict resolution strategies, or maintaining a shared journal to foster ongoing self-reflection and connection. Homework is not compulsory, but it will help to deepen your understanding of what we do during our sessions.
A coaching session is a dynamic and collaborative process, 100% tailored to the unique needs, goals and success of each person and family. Through a combination of awareness building, education, skill-building, and exploration of family dynamics, I help guide families toward improved communication, understanding, and harmony. By actively involving you in the process, coaching becomes a string of sessions that empower you and your family to navigate challenges and cultivate stronger, more resilient connections.
