Weekly Wins 21: 10 Practical Strategies for Home Organisation!
Apr 05, 2024In the hustle and bustle of daily life, maintaining an organised home can seem like an elusive goal. However, with practical strategies and a touch of intentional planning, achieving a well-organised living space becomes not only feasible but transformative. Find below, ten practical strategies that can bring order, efficiency, and a sense of calm to every corner of your home.
Establish a Central Command Station:
Create a central hub in your home where essential information is accessible to everyone. This could be a bulletin board, a family calendar, or a digital platform. Designate a space for important documents, schedules, and reminders to keep the entire family in the loop.
Declutter Regularly:
Set aside dedicated time for decluttering each room. Embrace the philosophy of "less is more" by donating or discarding items that no longer serve a purpose. Regular decluttering not only frees up physical space but also contributes to mental clarity. I promise you, it really does.
Utilise Storage Solutions:
Invest in storage solutions that maximise space and keep items organised. From labelled containers to shelving units, finding the right storage solutions for each room prevents clutter and makes it easier to find what you need. Bunnings will be your friend.
Adopt the One-In-One-Out Rule:
To maintain a sense of order, adhere to the one-in-one-out rule. Each time a new item enters the home, consider removing or donating a similar item. This practice prevents unnecessary accumulation and promotes a mindful approach to consumption.
Create Functional Zones:
Assign specific functions to different areas within a room. For instance, designate a reading nook in the living room, a study area in the bedroom, and a play zone in the kids' room. Functional zones streamline activities and help each family member find what they need more efficiently. This also helps when you can say to the kids “take this to the play zone please.”
Digital Organisation:
Extend your organisational efforts to the digital arena. Create folders on your computer, organise emails, and streamline your digital files. Digital clutter can be just as overwhelming as physical clutter, and a well-organised digital space contributes to increased productivity. Ok, honesty time, I’m not great at this. It’s a work in progress.
Implement a Weekly Cleaning Routine:
Establish a weekly cleaning routine that covers both deep cleaning and maintenance tasks. A consistent routine prevents tasks from piling up, making it more manageable to maintain a clean and organised home.
Label Everything:
Labelling is a simple yet powerful organisational tool. Label storage containers, drawers, and shelves to make it clear where items belong. This not only helps you find things quickly but also encourages other family members to return items to their designated places.
Prioritise Daily Tidying:
Incorporate a daily tidying routine into your schedule. Spending just a few minutes each day putting things back in their place prevents clutter from accumulating and ensures that your home stays organised effortlessly. Set a timer and everyone can do 5 minutes of daily tidying before dinner.
Family Involvement:
Encourage everyone in the family, including children, to participate in the organisation process. Assign age-appropriate tasks and make it a collective effort. Teaching organisational skills from a young age fosters a sense of responsibility and pride in the living space. Your kids will have great ideas on where to put things I promise you! See if from their perspective and you’ll have more great ways to organise their things.
A well-organised home is not only visually appealing but also contributes to a harmonious and stress-free living environment - A space where each item has its place, and every room has a sense of order!
Decluttering one room a month is a good place for me to start. That way I’m not overwhelmed with doing the whole house at once, and it’s something that you see instant benefit from!
Which is your favourite organisation strategy? What do you think you’ll implement at home?
Much love,
