Weekly Wins 47: Is a Community all it's Cracked Up To Be?

Oct 21, 2024

Raising children and maintaining a family and a relationship is an incredibly totally bonkers rewarding journey, but it can also be deeply challenging. Having a strong, supportive community can make all the difference in how parents navigate the ups and downs of their parenting experience. Community provides more than just a group of people to talk to; it offers connection, understanding, shared knowledge, and the reassurance that you are not alone in your struggles or triumphs.

The Importance of Community for Parents

Parenting, even under typical circumstances, often brings feelings of isolation. The shift in identity, the daily demands of child-rearing, and the pressure to “do it right” or "am I doing enough?" can leave parents feeling overwhelmed and disconnected from their pre-parenting lives. When you’re raising a neurodiverse child—whether dealing with a diagnosis like autism, ADHD, or sensory processing disorders—those challenges can multiply and energy diminishes faster than a block of cadbury's. There are often fewer people in your immediate circle who fully understand what you’re going through, and this can deepen that sense of isolation. Sometimes though, you might find your immediate circle don't even understand what you're going through too!!

A community of other parents who are walking similar paths can be incredibly reassuring. In a supportive environment, parents can share their stories, offer tips, ask for advice, and receive validation. It’s a space where they can acknowledge the unique challenges that come with neurodiversity and receive empathy from others who “get it.” This kind of mutual understanding can lower stress, reduce feelings of loneliness, and empower parents to keep moving forward on their journey.

Learning and Growth Through Shared Experiences

Another key benefit of being part of a community is the sharing of collective knowledge. While every child is different, the parenting experiences of others can offer practical insights. For instance, strategies that worked for someone else's child with ADHD or tips on handling sensory sensitivities might spark new ideas or approaches for your own family. For me, this has sparked so many new ideas just by being vulnerable and sharing life with people you feel supported by, not the check out person though!

Communities often bring together a range of perspectives, from newly navigating diagnoses to years of experience, creating a rich environment of learning. This shared knowledge is invaluable, especially when traditional avenues of support, like professional therapists or specialists, are either inaccessible or have long waiting lists. It allows parents to feel empowered, knowing they have actionable tools and resources that can make a real difference in their child’s life, and they are tried and tested!!

Emotional Support and Encouragement

At its core, community is about emotional connection. Parenting a neurodiverse child often comes with unexpected emotional hurdles—fear, guilt, worry about the future, and grief for the expectations you may have had before the diagnosis. In a community, parents can safely express these emotions and be met with compassion rather than judgment.

This is particularly important in the context of raising neurodiverse children, where the “standard” parenting advice may not apply. Having a group of people who won’t say, “They’ll grow out of it,” or “You just need to discipline them better,” is incredibly validating, oh gosh, how many times I heard "you just need to discipline them better!" ARGH!!!! Instead, community members offer understanding and a reminder that it’s okay to parent differently—that in fact, it’s essential.
