Embracing The New Year, Kinda but Later!
Jan 15, 2024As the clock strikes midnight and the calendar turns to a fresh page, the excitement of a new year beckons. It's a time filled with the promise of new beginnings, the thrill of possibilities, and the hope for positive change, coupled with contemplations of failed new years resolutions by January 2, and unrealised potential that may have occurred the previous year. Never fear! I have a plan, I always do. Before diving headfirst into the hustle of planning and preparation, let's take a moment to savour the present, reflect on the past, and dream about the future.
Savouring the Moments:
The transition into a new year often brings with it a rush to set resolutions and goals. However, amidst the excitement, I believe it’s so important to resist the urge to jump into planning immediately. You don’t need the house decluttered and organised by New Years and you don’t need your next 12 months mapped out by the time the clock strikes 12! Chill! There will be time for ALL of those things! Instead, relish the moments of the school holidays, cherishing the time with loved ones, and finding joy in simple pleasures, but clean out the school bags first! You’ll thank me later.
Closing the Chapter:
When you are ready, which could be before Christmas, between Christmas and New Years, or in January, close the chapter of the previous year. Reflect on the experiences, challenges, and accomplishments. Take the time to acknowledge personal growth, express gratitude for the lessons learned, and bid farewell to anything that no longer serves your well-being.
Dreaming and Feeling:
The new year is a canvas waiting to be painted with dreams and aspirations – that’s a bit fancy isn’t it. Take a moment to envision how you want the year to unfold. Don’t put pressure on yourself to make sure the painting you create is perfect, you’ll never get started! Consider not only the tangible goals but also the emotions you desire to experience. How do you want this year to feel? Let your dreams guide you as you set intentions for the months ahead.
Choosing Your Word:
Look I’ll be honest, I used to think this was a load of xxxxx. But then I tried it a few years back – some years I can’t choose one word and I have two! What a rebel. You can choose however many you like, however I think 3 would be the max. I’m still deciding on this years word… Why choose a word? Many find inspiration in selecting a guiding word for the year. This word serves as a focal point, encapsulating the essence of your aspirations. Whether it's "growth," "joy," or "resilience," let this word resonate with you and act as a compass as you navigate the upcoming year.
Time on Earth:
Stay with me on this one. I think my view of my time on earth changed when I had kids. I’m sure it does for most people. I think as you age too it becomes even more important – well it did for me anyway. Life is a precious gift (clichés aside!!), and each passing year is a reminder of the finite time we have on this earth. Use the new year as an opportunity to reflect on your priorities, values, and the legacy you wish to create. Embrace each day with gratitude and purpose, making the most of the time you have
Planning with Detail:
While spontaneity has its charm, detailed planning provides a roadmap to your goals. Break down your aspirations into actionable steps, creating a plan that aligns with your vision. Whether it's parenting goals, relationship goals, personal goals, career growth, or family goals, meticulous planning sets the stage for success. I can help you with this if you find it all too overwhelming.
A note to your present self, sometimes the year controls you, and you don’t control the year. Sometimes people get sick, partners lose their job, kids have developmental concerns that NEED your attention, and deservedly so. If this happens to you this year, or even is currently happening to you, 2024 isn’t done for! It just needs a little recalibrating!
Take the time to savour the present, reflect on the past, and dream about the future. I promise you, you’ll feel much more connected with yourself, your passions, desires and heart if you spend time doing this. Embrace the ebb and flow, choose your guiding word/s, make the most of your time, plan with detail, and remain flexible in the face of change. As the new year unfolds, may it bring fulfillment, growth, and an abundance of moments that truly matter
